Chapter 5 – Teaching: Didactic issues in ODL

In this chapter we understand teaching as encompassing the didactic considerations the teacher needs to think about for his/her teaching.

The planning of teaching in ODL demands more attention than classroom teaching because it often includes electronic media as the learning platform. Therefore the teacher’s needed competencies change from essentially being based around arranging subjects – as in the traditional classroom – to being based around arranging the learning process for individuals or groups that have to work autonomously.

We have in this chapter described the considerations a teacher has to make when planning and carrying though an ODL course. We have based the chapter on a didactic model that concerns:

  1. The initial situation of the learner
  2. Frameworks
  3. Goals
  4. Content/materials
  5. Working processes and methods
  6. Evaluation and assessment.

Each section contains advice about how to implement the considerations in practice.

Finally we have written some advice about how an empathic teacher can avoid drop-outs by helping learners with simple rules for study and by being present.
